SOUTHAMPTON DOCK DIDN' T CRACK UNDER MOVING DAY PRESSURE THANKS TO EVE
Never afraid of a challenge, however large in scale, when Eve was asked by Associated British Ports to relocate one of its cranes at Southampton Docks the leading supplier of temporary access solutions jumped at the chance to demonstrate the capabilities of its products and the expertise it could offer the project.
One of the busiest ports in the South of England, the project at Southampton Docks had many challenges which Eve was tasked to find solutions for, including the safe relocation of the 500 tonne Harbour mobile crane, whilst also protecting the fragile concrete infrastructure.
Any damage to the dock would not only have a detrimental impact on the crane’s relocation, but also wider implications on operational activity, therefore it was vital that Eve supplied a temporary road network which could provide ground protection and ease transportation. With these key considerations in mind and offering its expertise from similar logistical manoeuvres, Eve proposed its heavy duty K and Box trakway panels.
The temporary access solution spanned over 190 metres in length and eight metres wide to guide the crane to its new location. And with Eve on hand throughout the project to offer additional consultation, such as Health and Safety risk assessments regarding working near water and in close proximity to the dock’s overhead electricity pylons, the task took little over one day .
Glyn Mason, Maintenance Resources Manager of Associated British Ports, Southampton comments: “Using Eve’s trakway system allowed us to minimise disruption to operational activities, whilst still ensuring delivery of the crane for operational use on time. The move from the crane’s build location to the designated operational area meant that heavy duty vehicles had to travel across land that is not constructed for weight, therefore the structure Eve proposed played a vital role in this project, exceeding the requirements of the task in an efficient and safe way.”
Paul Hill, Business Development Co-ordinator at Eve concludes: “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to work with Associated British Ports designing an access solution that not only gave adequate protection to the ground, but also provided a suitable area to turn their crane to avoid an electricity transmission line that runs in close proximity to the dock. Eve's heritage and experience in working with cranes without doubt, helped towards a successful outcome.”
